Functional Crown Lengthening
When a tooth is broken or decayed there is sometimes not enough tooth structure present to hold a crown onto the tooth. In other situations there might be decay or another problem under the gum preventing your dentist from accessing this area to repair the problem. A crown lengthening procedure can be performed in these situations to expose more tooth structure. This allows your dentist to get to areas of the tooth he needs to have access to in order to properly correct the problem.
This simple surgical procedure takes about an hour. It involves removing some gum and bone in order to expose more tooth structure. The area should heal for about 6 weeks before your dentist begins his treatment. This allows for the gum tissue to be strong and healthy while the work is completed.
Functional crown lengthening is an important part of an integrated effort to optimize your health, appearance, comfort and function. A beautiful new smile and improved periodontal health are your keys to smiling, eating and speaking with comfort and confidence.
